The hammer was made by Sindri the Dwarf, and was the mightiest weapon that the gods possessed, even though it was made with a short handle by accident and foul play by Loki.
When thrown, the hammer would return to the wielder, and it is known to have been the greatest fear of the trolls, giants and Jotnarr. This design is not a historical copy.
