Runes, Sigils & Bindrune FAQ's

Peter Oakmund answers the Internet's burning Bind Rune questions

WHAT ARE BIND RUNES USED FOR?

Bind runes are three fold. Firstly, there are ‘practical’ bind runes. These are abbreviations, names, initials and things of that nature. Then there are ‘decorative’ bindrunes, and lastly ‘magical’ bindrunes. They can all be combined to create new meaning and symbolism. For example, you can combine a decorative bindrune with a magical bindrune, which is what most tattoo bindrunes are. Bindrunes also come from three periods of history. Bind runes that are Viking age are usually practical bind runes, with a bit of magical. There are also 14th-17th century Icelandic esoteric bindrunes, which are more esoteric magic than bind rune magic, but still considered magical none the less. Finally, you then have the modern variation, which are bindrunes for decoration.

BIND RUNES VS RUNES, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

The runes begin with the 24 Elder Futhark which are an alphabet. Each rune has a magical meaning, but is also a phonetical letter. When you combine these runes and ‘bind’ them together, you get bindrunes. Combining these runes into bindrunes amplifies the meaning of them, creating unique uses and concepts. A very good ancient example of this is the Triple Tiwaz. On its own, it symbolises justice, strength and honour. But combined, the Triple Tiwaz is now used to symbolise a sense of permanence in the world, for example: houses, ships and swords.

ARE BIND RUNES REAL?

They are very real and have the same power than tarot cards do for example. If you put meaning and purpose into them, they function in the same way that other types of spiritual and religious symbolism does. Bind runes are practical magic, and when applied for practical guidance and divination can boost one’s purpose in life.

ARE BIND RUNES NORSE?

Yes, in the tradional Norse meaning of coming from Northern Europe.

ARE BIND RUNES VIKING?

There are some Viking bind runes, but the main ones are either Icelandic, Middle-Aged or Modern.

IS THERE A BIND RUNES LIST?

There hasn’t been a comprehensive bind runes list until Peter Oakmud created ‘Runes, Sigils & Bindrunes’, his third book. This includes a modern and usable numeral system and various examples of bind runes including:
