The designs painted onto this skull draw from petroglyph carvings - the marks left in stone by the people of northern Europe long before the Viking Age, long before runes were formalised into alphabets. Petroglyphs are among the oldest visual languages in the world, scratched and ground into rock faces across Scandinavia over thousands of years: animals, ships, figures, suns, spirals and symbols whose full meaning has not survived but whose presence has. Isar has taken that visual tradition as his starting point and brought it onto the surface of an ethically sourced roe deer skull, connecting the oldest marks made by northern people to a natural object that belongs to the same landscape.

The result is a piece that sits outside the usual Northern Black range in its references while remaining entirely of it in its craft and intention. Something ancient on something natural, placed where it can be seen.
