THE STORY BEHIND THE ELDER FUTHARK RUNES BOOK & CARDS
This collection began as a simple idea and grew into a three-year creative odyssey.
Author Isar Oakmund chose the Elder Futhark not by accident, but by reverence — the oldest and most powerful form of the runes, tied to Odin’s own sacrifice upon Yggdrasil, the World Tree. In myth, Odin hung for nine days and nights, pierced by his own spear, to wrest the runes from the fabric of creation itself.
That myth is more than background — it is the soul of this work. Each rune in this book and deck is a reflection of that moment: a symbol wrestled from mystery, not borrowed from history.
Isar’s interpretations bridge the ancient and the modern. He sees the runes not as relics, but as living forces that still speak to those who listen — “the magic of the runes is far from gone,” he writes, “it is a living tradition.”

THE MAKING OF THE RUNES — TRADITION MEETS ART
Three years in the making! Countless sketches, revisions, and late-night messages.
To bring the runes to life visually, Isar turned to artist Galaxara, whose illustrations transform each symbol into a story. Every image was developed under Isar’s art direction, blending ornamental Norse design with narrative illustration. What began as sketches has become a fully realised collaboration.
Each card began as a hand-drawn pencil sketch, later refined with digital precision. Around 85% of the artwork retains its traditional base, ensuring every rune feels touched by the human hand. The runes themselves were drawn in ink by Isar — the same precision he brings to his tattoo craft — before being layered into Galaxara’s fluid, organic compositions.
Galaxara’s watercolour background brings motion, emotion, and atmosphere; Isar’s linework brings structure, mythology, and form. The result is a fusion of two worlds — the natural and the symbolic, the spiritual and the crafted.
As Galaxara says, “I wanted people to feel that there has been an artist’s hand behind this.” You can see that touch in every brush mark and rune line — a reminder that, like the Elder Futhark itself, true creation is carved by hand and heart.
